Andrew was born in the hamlet of Bogbuie, described in 1848-852 as a large hamlet consisting of a number of small farms, the houses of which are one storey and in good repair. Property of Arthur Forbes Esq. of Culloden.
His parents were William Mackenzie and Isobel Mackenzie. At the time he married Mary Forbes he was living at the Braes of Findon (Braefindon).
In the 1841 census he is in Braefindon, occupation Hookmaker, with his wife Mary and daughters Ann and Henny. In the 1851 census he is shown as a farmer of 124 acres; he is a widower; his daughter Ann is still with him as a housekeeper, and also in the household is John Simpson, a cattle herd.
