Biography
Helen was born in spring 1868, the second daughter and fifth child of George Bellamy and Eliza Thiele.
Helen's father, an assistant surgeon with the Royal Navy, had been posted to Esquimalt in 1866. Sister Alice was added to the family, followed by brother Francis, who arrived as their parents separated. Father George returned to England in 1871 and passed away in 1875. The 1881 Canada census also included half-brother Edward in the family.[1]
At some point Helen was drawn to the mining boom town of Leadville, Colorado (along with some of her siblings), and married Scotsman Andrew Hawick. The couple had two daughters, Alice and Annie, the latter being born after Andrew was killed in a Rossland mining accident. The group of three were in 1901 residing in Helen's hometown outside Victoria, BC.[2] Sometime thereafter the two fatherless girls were sent to Shetland to live with their grandparents.
At age 37 in winter 1906, Helen married 38-year-old widower Samuel Kelland.[3] The pair's daughter Irene was born later that year.[4]
Gertrude Helen Kelland passed away in spring 1915.[5]
Research Notes
After Helen's death, second husband Samuel went on to marry the sister of Helen's first husband.
