Biography
Edith was born in autumn 1864, the first daughter and second child of George Bellamy and Eliza Thiele. Brother George had been born the previous year. Father George was in spring 1865 posted to HMS Cumberland in port at Sheerness, Kent, where brother Arthur was born. The group of five then relocated to Vancouver Island when in spring 1866 father George was attached to HMS Sutlej and assigned duties at the naval hospital at Esquimalt.
While at Esquimalt, brother Hugh and sisters Gertrude and Alice were added to the family. Brother Francis arrived as her parents separated, with father George returning to England and passing away in 1875. The 1881 Canada census also included half-brother Edward in the family.[1]
At age 23 in autumn 1887, Edith married 30-year-old Andrew Thom.[2] The couple relocated to Leadville, Colorado, then Nelson, BC, where son Robert was born in 1898.[3]
Evidently while living in Nelson, Edith developed a relationship with one Alexander Murray, leading to daughter Irene's birth in spring 1901. The pair married in spring 1903, and two years later added son William. The 1911 Canada census found the group of four living in Vancouver.[4] The 1921 Canada census found Edith back in Victoria, with all her children.[5] The 1931 census found Edith and Alexander living with daughter Irene at 3164 Balfour.[6]
Edith Winifred Murray passed away in autumn 1944.[7]
Research Notes
According to sister Alice's wedding notice, Edith and her husband were living in Leadville, Colorado in 1895. It appears likely that Edith paved the way for her close siblings to relocate to the mining boom town. Eldest brother George remained there for most his life from 1896, ostensibly abandoning his wife in Victoria (she later married brother Francis). Brother Hugh's obituary states that he had spent a year in the United States, which would fit with a cluster of Bellamy's at Leadville in the 1890s. And finally, sister Helen married at Leadville in 1897.
