Biography
Alice was born in summer 1869, the third daughter and sixth child of George Bellamy and Eliza Thiele.
Alice's father, an assistant surgeon with the Royal Navy, had been posted to Esquimalt in 1866. Brother Francis arrived in summer 1871 as their parents separated. Father George returned to England and passed away in 1875. The 1881 Canada census also included half-brother Edward in the family.[1]
Evidently Alice and a number of her siblings had associations with the continental mining districts which took them to Colorado, where at age 25 in winter 1895, Alice married 30-year-old Scotsman James McLaren:
Mr. James A. McLaren and Miss Alice M. Bellamy were united in marriage on Thursday, March 7, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Pelta, 206 West Fifth street. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. D. L. Fleming, and was witnessed by a few of the intimate friends of the young couple. A very excellent wedding supper was served after the ceremony. The bride is a charming lady, and is the sister of Mrs. Thom, of this city. The groom is an old-timer here. He was for a long time connected with the post office department, but is at present engaged in mining. Mr. and Mrs. McLaren have fitted up a cosy home on Pine street.[2]
Their first child Robert was born while the couple remained in Colorado, but they subsequently returned to the area of Alice's birth at Victoria, BC. Sons James and Monteith were added to the family, as reflected in the 1901 Canada census.[3]
The following decade saw four more children added to the family: Alice, Archibald, Kathryn and Elizabeth, where 1911 found the family living at 723 Powderly Ave.[4][5] Son Frank and daughter Margaret were added to the family before son Robert Gordon was killed during the great war.[6] Grandchildren appeared in the household by 1931.[7]
Husband James passed away in 1934. At age 72 in spring 1942, Alice married 69-year-old Fred Graham,[8] who passed away two years later.
Alice Mary Graham passed away in summer 1952.[9]
