Biography
Hugh was born in spring 1867, the third son and fourth child of George Bellamy and Eliza Jane Thiele. Hugh's father, an assistant surgeon in the Royal Navy, had been transferred from HMS Cumberland to HMS Sutlej in spring 1866, taking the family to Esquimalt. As a consequence Hugh was the first of the family's children to be born in colonial British Columbia.

While at Esquimalt, sisters Gertrude and Alice were added to the family. Brother Francis arrived as his parents separated, with father George returning to England and passing away in 1875. The 1881 Canada census also included half-brother Edward in the family.[1]

The 1891 census found Hugh living, along with sister Helen, in the household of sister Edith and brother-in-law Andrew Thom.[2]

At age 31 in spring 1898, Hugh married 25-year-old Mary McMillan.[3] Son Gerald and daughter Edith were added to the family, as reflected in the 1901 Canada census.[4] Daughter Thelma arrived while the family remained on Vancouver Island at Wellington, before relocating to mainland Vancouver by 1911.[5]

Hugh Gerald Seymour Bellamy passed away in spring 1945 (see notes):[6]

One of B.C.'s earliest residents, Hugh G. S. Bellamy, 78, of 3290 Irving Street, Burnaby, died at his home on Sunday. One of the first white children to be born at Esquimalt, Mr. Bellamy was the son of a naval surgeon who came to Victoria on the H.M.S. Zealous in 1867. [Hugh] arrived in Vancouver in 1886, three days before the fire. Mr. Bellamy was a building contractor. He laid the first sidewalk in Vancouver, along Water Street. Besides his wife, Mr. Bellamy is survived by a son, Cpl. H. G. S. Bellamy, R.C.O.C.; two daughters, Mrs. W. Fontaine at home and Mrs. Henderson of Vancouver; a sister, Alice, Victoria; a brother, Frank, also of Victoria, and eight grandchildren.[7]

Research Notes
Hugh's father was indeed attached to HMS Zealous, but only after it arrived in Esquimalt in summer 1867 (also after Hugh was born). The family had already been in Esquimalt for a full year, with George having been attached to and arrived on the previous flagship, HMS Sutlej.

It appears likely that Hugh and sister Helen, after having been living with the Thoms in Victoria, followed them to Leadville, Colorado a few years later.

Hugh's obituary made no reference to his surviving half-siblings.
